New (and Used) Stuff

The great thing about bikes is that it’s  easy to find a steal on parts, especially used stuff. I think about half my bike stuff is used. One of the things that I had been craving the past couple of years was a Specialized TT2 helmet. I loved the looks and figured it would fit my aero position  well. At $250 retail, I didn’t want to cough up that much $$. I finally found a used one on eBay and won the auction at an awesome price. Yes, it has a few scratches on it, but I didn’t buy this thing for looks. I used it in my first outdoor TT of the year today and loved how it felt. Of course, the true test will be in the summer when it’s humid and in the 80s…:)

While not used, another recent acquisition were some new brakes. I was looking for something lighter with better modulation than my SRAM Red.I Found the Planet X brakes to be a good buy for the money, especially considering the recent exchange rate with the British Pound. These are the same brakes as the $400 Feather Brakes, weigh less than 200 g, and can be had for a little over $100 shipped from the UK (and they included free Ti skewers). Wow! Plus, they come in several colors…:)

  1. Do you have any clearance issues with these Planet X calipers and the Stinger9’s? I have Dura Ace calipers right now and have to shave down the pads to make them fit. Looking for something new that opens fairly wide and these caught my eye. Thanks!

  2. Nope. I was worried at first. If you look at my race post for 4/11/10, you’ll see a Stinger 9 on my Felt with the Planet X brakes. Using standard size or Swiss Stop pads might not work, but the Kool Stop/Zipp carbon pads have enough clearance.

  3. I saw that in the pic. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t have to do anything significant to modify the pads(like taking a dremel and sanding block to $50 worth of pads like I did).

    Thanks again!
