Oh, how I couldn’t resist a race report title like that one. The usual suspects of Chicago area TTs again played into our lives, both in name and pain, but this time in one weekend. As I think back to 4+ years of TTs, I don’t remember doing back-to-back races in one weekend. One day yes, but not one weekend.
I had gotten some sort of flu bug the week before and missed the Coleta TT, so I was really looking forward to these two races. I still wasn’t 100%, but hoped my diminished training while sick helped rest my legs. Plus, the weather looked to be halfway decent. Not too hot, not too cold with a reasonable wind.
My Harvard TT was a pleasant surprise. I ended up posting my fastest time for this course, despite really hurting the last 10K that was into headwind. I had the power numbers I was hoping for in my condition and I was fairly consistent with my speed. The race was overcast and humid, but still felt fast. I was also using my Hed Stinger Powertap Disc in its second race and really enjoying it. Feels much like a regular wheel. I ended up finishing second in the Masters 30+, so I was pretty happy. My time was also faster than others who have routinely beaten me in the past.
The Bong 1.5 TT was introduced last year. We normally do one lap (20K) or two (40K), but did 1.5 laps for 30K today. I was tired and wasn’t sure how my body would respond after racing the day before. The weather was cooler than the previous day and there was a fair NE wind. That meant we would have a finishing tailwind. I felt OK the first lap and my effort the previous day had done me in. I still posted my first lap time ever though, which made me happy. I ended up finishing with the same overall speed as the day before. Not bad considering I wasn’t 100%.
Not much to say other than doing two TTs in one weekend is hard!
