When you look at newer TT frames, you’ll see that manufacturer’s are doing all sorts of things to “hide” brakes from the wind to make their frames more aero. Putting the rear brake by the bottom bracket (like on my Felt B2R) has become the norm on most newer bikes. Some companies have also gone to putting the front brake behind the fork (though this leaves a fair amount of cable exposed), while others are integrating the brake directly into the fork (like the new Trek Speed Concept).
While bike manufacturers have played around with brakes, none of the major brake manufacturers have developed true aero brakes One independent designer, Matt Simkins, created the Egg Brake. It is an aero brake that has actually been tested in the wind tunnel. I don’t know how much of a difference it really makes in time, but it is more aero than a standard front brake. Plus, it looks cool! I decided to give it a try after reading a good review on Roadbikereview.com.
Installation wasn’t as hard as I thought. It comes with detailed instructions. I’m used to installing lots of different types of brakes. The only unusual thing about the Egg Brake was having to remove the right brake shoe in order to install the cable. Once installed, I put the brake shoe back on and just needed needle nose pliers to make cable adjustments when installing the wheel. I haven’t taken these for a ride yet, but they seem to grip pretty well. I’ll post more when I get some rides in on them.
