While I’ve got a bum shoulder, I figured I might be of some use and post some of the best tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years while working on my bike (it was that or pharmaceutical marketing tips). To start things off, we’ll talk about bar tape. [sound of crickets]. Yes, it’s not the most exciting thing on a bike, but it can make a huge aesthetic and performance difference. Plus, just about anyone can wrap bar tape (especially if you love arts and crafts). It just takes practices. OK, here we go!
- CLEAN your bar tape! Nothing says “unpro” like dirty tape. I personally like using a degreaser (eg, Simple Green) to clean it, since much of the grime handlebars attract is oil related
- REPLACE your tape! If your tape is becoming unraveled or has worn away in spots, it’s probably a good time to get some new stuff. Bar tape can run anywhere from $10-$40, so it’s not crazy expensive. Plus, it’s a great way to personalize your bike, because you can get it in about any color. Wrapping tape isn’t that hard…it just takes some practice. You can try wrapping it once and if it doesn’t work, just try again. I’m posting a link to a video that shows you how to do it
- DOUBLE UP on the cushioning if you need it. If you ride really rough roads or have hand/wrist issues (eg, arthritis), you can add an extra layer of tape to provides extra cushioning and shock absorption. Another option is to use something like the Fizik bar gels. I went that route a few years ago once I started riding with a broken wrist.
Well, that’s it. Be PRO and don’t overlook your bar tape!
