What’s Your Moxi?

Moxifloxacin.  Nope, it’s not the name of a new pop group, it’s a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. After a course of azithromycin, my sinus infection was still hanging around so my MD put me on Avelox (moxifloxacin).  I was familiar with the fluoroquinolones, and knew they made good second- and third-round antibiotics.  The one thing that freaked me out was the rare occurence of tendon ruptures in patients taking fluoroquinolones.  Sure, they were rare, but you never want to be that one statistical anaomly.  Still, I really didn’t notice much of a difference with my patellar tendonitis for the first six days.  It was something else that made me stop taking it.

For a couple of days, I noticed my heart rate slightly higher at night.  Normally, it would be about 60 bpm and it was 80+ bpm without caffeine or other stimulants.  Finally, last night my neck blood vessels were pumping and my heart was going.  Couldn’t sleep.  Stopped taking it today and felt better.  Time to go back to something else.  I had a weird feeling when the doctor got me on Avelox.  Good antibiotic for some people, just not me.
